And I Really Liked That Purse, Too

Dear Real Simple Magazine,

If your cover story is "Great style you can really afford," then the cover photo should not include a Prada purse that costs two thousand dollars. I cannot, in fact, really afford that.

Love,
Dr. Maureen

and this would be the reason that I let my subscription to Real Simple lapse, because I was tired of their money saving tips that I could not ever hope to do, because they cost too much :-).

I'm with you - I love when they have an item about fashion 'pieces' under $100. The page will have a belt, a pair of earrings, and a T-shirt from the Gap on it - Wow, what steals!!

I second Tracy's comment, exactly.

Likewise, I nearly wrote into the Boston Globe to tell them where to stuff their magazine, the day I read their issue on going green and saving money yadda yadda...the same issue which featured a $1,500 skirt.

A friend of mine from the moms' group I used to visit actually did write a letter in response to a story of theirs on money-saving cooking, to inform them that their article made some mighty big assumptions about what kinds of equipment and supplies people already owned, and she calculated what she'd have to spend to make this "cheap" meal. Ha.

Laughed out loud! Thank you.

It is sad how often I have this response to "money saving tips" and "great deals".
